Devon & Cornwall Police Volunteer Award Categories 2024

Similar to the players’ player award in sports, cadets from each unit nominate one of their fellow cadets for outstanding contribution. This award is open to all Cadets affiliated with the Devon and Cornwall Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme.  It focuses on an individual Cadet’s outstanding contribution to their cadet unit or local community. This could include:

  • Demonstrating excellent participation and commitment to their local community and police service;
  • Demonstrating great willingness to support their peers;
  • Demonstrating excellent qualities in line with being a strong role model;
  • Utilising their skills and knowledge gained through participation at Cadets to benefit others;
  • Giving their valuable time freely to support the police whilst managing other responsibilities at home, school or elsewhere;
  • Achieving outstanding personal development / or overcoming personal challenges.

(Regular attendance to training and team meetings alone should not be a criteria).

This award is open to units affiliated with the Devon and Cornwall Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme.  It focuses on a group’s outstanding contribution to their local policing team or community.  This could include examples of one or more of the following:

  • The unit achieve excellent participation and commitment to their local community by supporting the police service;
  • The unit represent the Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme in an exemplary manner;
  • The unit have achieved an outstanding result in support of their local community;
  • The unit have utilised their skills and knowledge gained through participation at VPC to benefit others;
  • They have given their valuable time freely to support the police whilst managing other responsibilities at home, school or elsewhere.

(Regular attendance to training and team meetings alone should not be a criteria).

This award focuses on an individual Special Constable’s outstanding contribution to supporting frontline policing through enhanced visibility and support of local communities, best practice in the detection and prevention of harm, the protection of the vulnerable, reducing crime and safeguarding communities and neighbourhoods.  A high quality accessible service to the public upholding the Code of Ethics and Force standards of behaviour.  Long service in itself should not be a criteria. 

The nomination should include examples in at least one of the following areas:

  • Demonstrating effective operational support to frontline policing and the communities we serve;
  • Demonstrating effective support to the police service, adding value and improving our visibility and support of our communities;
  • Have led, or significantly contributed to, an initiative or project, which was in support of policing objectives, that has had a measurable impact on the community.

This award focuses on an individual Volunteer’s outstanding contribution to policing.

The nomination should include examples in at least one of the following areas:

  • Demonstrating effective support to frontline policing and the communities we serve e.g. G7, other operations or local initiatives, reducing demand on frontline resources;
  • Demonstrating effective support to the police service, adding value and improving our visibility and support of our communities e.g. engagement events providing crime prevention information and signposting, reducing demand on frontline resources;
  • Their actions have had a measurable impact on the local community and contributed positively in support of LPA objectives;
  • Shown resilience and commitment to their volunteering role.

This award is to recognise police staff and police officers, who have supported volunteers, Specials, Cadets or accredited persons (CSAS) within their paid roles.  Championing and supporting volunteers within the local team making them feel a valued member of the wider policing family.  Nominators need to provide one or more detailed examples outlining how the officer or member of staff has provided this support.

  • Demonstrating commitment and support to volunteers, special constables, cadets or accredited persons;
  • That they have developed volunteers, special constables or cadets to better support regular colleagues or the local community;
  • Evidence to show that volunteers, special constables, cadets or accredited persons are utilised effectively to support and reduce demand on local teams;
  • Show that volunteers, special constables, cadets or accredited persons are valued and recognised for their contribution;
  • Demonstrate that volunteers, special constables, cadets and accredited persons are integrated and included as part of the policing family.

This award focuses on teamwork or team initiatives where officers have made a significant contribution to operational policing in their areas.  The nomination should include examples in at least one of the following areas:

  • Sustained successful involvement within a Neighbourhood, Response, Roads Policing or LPA team;
  • Demonstrated teamwork in resolving a policing or community problem;
  • Significant contribution made to a particular policing objective; or
  • Shown teamwork which promotes collaborative working.

This award focuses on a Police Support Volunteer Team’s outstanding contribution to policing.  This could be a team of volunteers in a particular role e.g. vehicle checkers, Local Policing Support Volunteers or a team of volunteers within a geographic area.  The nomination should be made for the team of Volunteers in at least one of the following areas:

  • The nominees demonstrated effective support to policing in their Local Policing Area (LPA);
  • The nominees demonstrated effective support adding value to the police service;
  • Shown resilience and commitment to their volunteering role;
  • The action or initiative has had a measurable impact on the local community; or
  • The action or initiative has contributed positively in support of LPA objectives.

We are seeking nominations of individuals who are accredited through the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) or teams who, through their work and accreditation, have made a significant difference and impact on their communities.  This could include an example of projects or day to day working which achieve one or more of the following:

  • Have significantly contributed towards tackling anti-social behaviour and making their local community safer, through joint initiatives, operations or day to day working;
  • Have been innovative through working in partnership, through CSAS, to safeguard vulnerable individuals;
  • Who have actively promoted the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) and the benefits to community safety.

This award is open to all schools who have engaged with the mini police programme run by Devon & Cornwall Police. The nomination could include:

  • Examples of a social action activity or a project that is innovative and demonstrates working with the community;
  • That they are ambassadors for their school and community;
  • Demonstrating good teamwork, being kind and considerate.

An individual or team who has displayed a profound commitment supporting the Force’s vision, “World Class Sustainable Policing" in accordance with the National Code of Ethics and our Force standards of behaviour.  This could include:

  • Schemes or initiatives that have prevented and/or deterred crime;
  • Schemes or initiatives that have protected people from harm or protected the vulnerable;
  • Schemes or initiatives that have maintained visibility and engagement to tackle issues affecting communities;
  • Supporting local policing teams to safeguard communities and neighbourhoods;
  • Demonstrating sustainable and innovative ways to support the police service;
  • Providing a sustainable high quality service to the public such as improving access to, and visibility with, our communities.
